Picture this. It’s 1998, the stock market is booming, technology is on the rise, and a young Billy Van Wie is working 70-hour weeks as a branch manager at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Flash forward 20 years, and not only do you have a marketing firm that has built itself from the ground up, but you also have a vice president, husband and father of four who is just as dedicated to his family as he is to his work. As second-in-command here at image.works, Billy leads our team with a smile on his face every day.
Describe what you do on a day-to-day basis.
Talk to current clients to make sure we are meeting their needs. Come up with different ideas to help them tackle their challenges. Prospect for new clients who need the services we offer. Talk with staff to make sure we are all on the same page and focusing on our clients’ needs.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The relationships, both with my coworkers and our clients. I don’t get to meet many of our clients in person, but after 20 years there are some strong bonds that mean the world to me.
How has image.works helped you grow?
Growing with the company has given me a unique perspective. I remember what it was like to be the low man on the totem pole. I think I am more understanding and patient. Mistakes will happen, but if we are all giving 100% and bending over backward for our clients, we can solve anything.
What do you consider your biggest achievement to date?
My family, hands down. I married an incredible woman who is an even better mom. I am proud of who my kids are becoming, and I am excited for the next hurdle!
How do you define success?
For me, it’s balance: life and then work. When the end comes, my kids will remember a dad who was always there for them, like my dad was for me. Life is short, and time is precious. That is my definition of success.
What does leadership mean to you?
The leaders I respect most have led by example. Words often don’t carry the same weight. A true leader won’t ask someone else to do something they haven’t done or are not willing to do themselves.
What are some of your hobbies outside image.works?
Coaching youth sports, photography and real estate investing. I also sit on the Executive Leadership Team for the American Heart Association in Madison, Wisconsin.
